STARS IN BRASS

Williams Fairey Engineering Band
Works of Berlioz
SIBCD001

ABOUT THE CD
Stars in Brass was founded in 1987 by me, Peter Nicholas. My intention was to record brass band music that catered for all tastes and was 'easy on the ear'.

In 1992 I approached Cyril Howarth (the manager of the Williams Fairey Engineering Band) and Major Peter Parkes (their conductor) with the idea of recording 'The Works of Berlioz'. Over a period of four days in April and June 1992, the album was recorded at BBC Studio 7 in Manchester. The music programme comprised 'Hungarian March', Carnaval Romain', 'The Corsair', 'Benvenuto Cellini', 'Witches Sabbath' and 'Judges Of The Secret Court'. Also included were two lesser known pieces, 'Will O'The Wisps' and 'Ballet Des Sylphes', both arranged by Major Parkes.

At the time, the CD was acclaimed as one of the finest ever made, and by one of the best brass bands of all time. You can read the 4barsrest revue of the album by clicking here

I would like to thank Dr. Michel Austin and Dr. Monir Tayeb who kindly gave their permission to use the picture of 'Berlioz in Rome' on the front cover of the re-released CD. You can visit their website and find out more about Hector Berlioz by clicking here

Today, the Williams Fairey Engineering Band is known as the Fairey (Geneva) Band. You can visit their website by clicking here
